What is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis (GP) is a severe, disabling neuro-muscular disorder of the digestive system that affects over 5 million people. It can be defined simply as paralysis of the stomach and is commonly referred to as "delayed gastric emptying". However, the havoc it can cause in a persons life is anything but simple. It makes the most common daily task of eating extremely painful and difficult. Because the food does not digest it can cause heartburn, pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomitting of undigested food, weight loss, bloating, gastroesophageal reflux, spasms in the stomach and a lack of appetite. It is a chronic condition which can treated but for which there is currently no cure.
